Donald Bybee, Project Manager Extraordinaire, Bids Farewell to Angel Island
It was nearly ten years ago that Donald Bybee, Senior Architect for the California State Parks, began to plan the restoration of the Immigration Station. Under his watchful eye, the Detention Barracks were stabilized, the precious poetry preserved and a master plan was developed for the entire site. Working closely with AIISF staff, Don was instrumental in the application for funding from the California Cultural and Historical Endowment and from Congress through the federal appropriations process.
His stated plans now include "padding around in fuzzy slippers," but I'm sure we can entice him back to Angel Island from time to time as our resident architectural guru. Every project needs one, and Don is simply the best. His quite manner, easy temperament, and meticulous attention to detail have brought us a fully restored Detention Barracks. As he exits, his plans for stabilizing the hospital will be implemented this spring. Enjoy your retirement, Don; you've earned it.
