Everything to know about visiting San Francisco's Angel Island (SF Gate)

When it comes to islands in the San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz's famed jail hogs all the attention. But sitting pretty just beyond the prison isle is another Bay Area gem: the often-overlooked Angel Island. 

Throughout Angel Island's history, its 740 acres have been many things, including hunting grounds for indigenous Americans, a lumberyard for ship repairs, a cattle ranch, a Civil War military base, a quarantine site, an immigration station for newcomers to the U.S., a missile defense site and, since the 1960s, a California state park.
