The only ferry route connecting San Francisco to Angel Island will continue on a long-term basis under the management of Golden Gate Ferry following a board vote on Friday.

The Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District took over the ferry route in December under a one-year trial run. Its previous operator, the Blue and Gold Fleet, announced plans to relinquish the service after several decades.

"We truly appreciate that the Golden Gate Bridge district has decided to permanently adopt ferry service to Angel Island," said Ed Tepporn of the Angel Island Immigration Station Foundation, a nonprofit group. "While visits to Angel Island State Park have not returned to pre-pandemic levels, more and more people are venturing outdoors again. The park remains an invaluable Bay Area destination where locals and tourists can access scenic natural resources and visit the former U.S. immigration station, a natural historic landmark."
