A Reading in Toisanese / Yui Poon Ng
The largest percentage of the Chinese immigrants who came to America in the first part of the twentieth century were from an area of Guangdong Province called the Toishan District, one of four counties then known as Sze Yup (which also included Sunwui, Hoiping and Yanping). They primarily spoke Cantonese and Toisanese. When the Angel Island poems are read aloud, many rhyme in their native dialect. Mr. Ng read several poems in their native Toisanese and generously donated the videos to AIISF.
